wooden boat gunnels
Gunnels for boat, what wood to use? discussion in 'wooden boat building and restoration' started by elioti, oct 2, 2008. joined: feb 2008 posts: 21 likes: 0, points: 0, legacy rep: 10 location: devon, england elioti junior member. hi there, i need to replace the gunnels on a 34 ft grp motorboat. Re: gunwale wood recommendations in my limited experience, oak bent easier than douglas fir with none of the snapping. almost everything about boats involves so much more time and money than one anticipates that rational and accurate planning will deter even starting. The inset plates look nice, but require you to plan ahead, and trim the gunwales very carefully. the easier, and equally attractive way to do it is to cut a triangular piece of wood to fit and attach it with screws down through inner gunwale. if you do not want to cut your own, you can buy plastic or wood plates online.
wooden boat gunnels I am still thinking about putting wood gunnels on my 16’ kevlar tandem canoe. i’ve been checking on availability, and my last obstacle is the concern that maybe the wood gunnels would not hold up to the stresses of transport. i strap the canoe onto the top of a van. right now, the canoe has only 1 center thwart. there is no question about formed high tech aluminum being stronger than wood. I decided to bend one piece at a time and soak the gunwale end in water for two days, poured boiling water over the end, and placed it in a steam box for 1 hour. i have steamed and bent numerous stems from other cedar strip canoes i've built. so i know i need to take time securing the gunwale in the form. but at the very last moment, the wood.
