My suggestion is: wrap 'em with leather instead. any serious fixed-seat rower will tell you, smooth, well-lubricated oar leathers work better than lumpy, bumpy rope-wrapped oars. you want to be able to slide your oars inboard or outboard to adjust your leverage and technique in different conditions.
